I'm John Soares. Thanks for stopping by to visit.
I make the bulk of my income writing supplements for college textbooks published by the major names in the field, including Prentice Hall/Pearson Education and Cengage Publishing (formerly Wadsworth Publishing). I've also done work for McGraw-Hill and Harper-Collins. I've written an ebook on how to write supplements for college textbooks that details everything I know about writing student study guides, instructor's manuals, test questions, Internet exercises, lecture outlines and many more supplements, plus how to win lucrative assignments from editors. (See the cover in the column to the left.) You can also learn about the business by visiting and subscribing to the Writing College Textbook Supplements blog. In early 2010 I completed my favorite work to date: Intelligent Productivity for Freelance Writers: Manage Your Time, Make More Money, and Get More Enjoyment from Life.
I’m the co-author of 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California, third edition, and author of 75 Hikes in California’s Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park Regions, revised edition.
I've been a full-time writer since 1994. In addition to the two books above, I've written over 100 outdoors and travel articles for newspapers and magazines, including Sunset and VIA.
My main outdoors website is Northern California Hiking Trails. It contains information about my two hiking guides, plus a selection of downloadable hike descriptions with maps and photos, and also a photo gallery section.
I blog frequently about hiking, the outdoors, and nature observation at the Northern California Hiking Trails blog.
I also have two other blogs that are new in 2010. Critical Success Factors examines why we must identify the important causes of success -- and failure. And on the Selling Information Products site I discuss what I've learned about selling e-books, audio books, and other information products on the Internet.
And I have a five-acre, level piece of land for sale for $24,000 near Dorris, California, just south of the Oregon border.
